Hey Friends!
So today thought we’d post an excerpt from a future project that is in the works...
Chapter One
Ruby sighed at the impending apartment stairs as she pushed the lock button on her key fob. Her car beeped in response as she began her climb up to the third story of the Thunderwood Apartments. Upon reaching her door she rolled her eyes and snatched the taped paper from her door. She then fumbled with her keys in search of the right one, wishing Joy had remembered to turn on the porch light when she had stopped by to feed Sam that afternoon. Ruby was relieved at the click of the lock giving way with the correct key having finally been inserted. She opened the door and quickly locked it behind her. She threw the keys into her purse which she then tossed onto the worn sofa and kicked off her heels. She then made her way into the kitchen and groaned at the sight of the dishes stacked in the sink to a height she was sure Mount Everest would be jealous of. Ignoring them, she opened the fridge. Her appetite small, she grabbed a can of Coke and made her way to the bedroom. Sam lifted his head from where he lay at the foot of the bed. “Hey Buddy, I’m home.” Ruby sighed and petted the old, golden retriever’s head. The dog returned her greeting with a lick to her hand. “A small comfort on this hectic day.” Ruby thought as she stretched her neck and slid the tailored jacket off her shoulders, revealing a burgundy sleeveless top beneath and a handgun fastened to the belt of her gray, pencil skirt. Ruby hung the jacket onto her room doorknob and then made her way to the head of the bed. Yawning, she placed the soda can onto the nightstand and unfastened the holster from her hip. She then placed the weapon still tucked in its holster, beneath her pillow and then pulled back the covers. Snuggling beneath them she unfolded the paper which had been taped to her door. “Just as I suspected. Ol’ Miss. Leverson is complaining about your barking again, Sam.” The dog raised his shaggy head from the bed and gave Ruby the puppy dog eyes. “That woman is deaf unless it comes to you. Think she just tries to spite me, the grouchy old thing. Now she’s trying to threaten me that it’s the last straw, either I get rid of you or she’s going to management and making sure we’re kicked out this time.” Ruby held her head in her hands. “Just one more thing I needed this evening.” Sam army crawled up to Ruby, curled up next to her and nudged her elbow with his wet nose. A small smile spread across Ruby’s red lips as she patted the dog’s head once more. Noticing her agency name tag still about her neck, Ruby removed the lanyard and tossed it onto the nightstand. Her eyes fell on the journal laying there and she reached for it. Sighing, she shook her head and withdrew her hand. “Not tonight...already have shed enough tears for one day. Maybe I’ll just watch some YouTube tonight." Ruby looked around for her phone and then remembered her purse was still out on the sofa. Shrugging her shoulders she leaned her head back against the headboard of the bed and closed her eyes.......
