This song has been an encouragement and great reminder to my husband and I many times. It is one of our favorites to sing together. Through this journey of life here on earth we all face many trying times of trials and temptations, yet the Lord promises us that He will never give us more than we can bear, and that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Horatio G. Spafford suffered many things in life, lost his son due to illness, lost his business due to the Chicago fire, and then lost his daughters at sea. Mr. Spafford sailed to meet up with his wife. On this journey, which took Mr. Spafford over the spot believed to be where his daughters were drowned, he wrote the now famous hymn, “It is Well”.
This is a great reminder that no matter what happens in life, we know that God has a purpose for our lives. Though He doesn't promise that life will only be filled with good, He does promise to work all things for our good. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his promise.” Romans 8:28. We can rest in these promises and trust God to carry us through each trial and bring Himself glory whether in life or death and say, "It is Well".
